Ugh, it happened again. You’re stuck in a rut and feeling uninspired.
You know you need to get moving and doing SOMETHING, but you feel stuck, bored, frustrated, and unsure of what to do. You’re lacking inspiration!
Inspiration and motivation are the spice of life. Although it’s impossible to always be inspired or motivated, these are two pretty important things that help keep us moving towards our goals and the people we want to become.
So if you’ve been feeling uninspired and in a rut lately, here are my top tips to help you get that spark lit again.
1. Learn from others you admire
When you’re having a hard time finding inspiration within yourself, try turning to others.
Read books, listen to podcasts, or watch videos from people that make you feel inspired and uplifted. Pay attention to others that achieved the things you are aiming for and learn from their journeys.
However, beware of gravitating towards social media platforms like Instagram or Tiktok that have been scientifically proven to have negative effects on our mental health. According to the American Psychological Psychological Association, “studies have linked Instagram to depression, body image concerns, self-esteem issues, social anxiety, and other problems.” We definitely don’t need that negative energy when we’re trying to spark creativity within ourselves.
I often find myself getting excited and inspired by sticking to authors and content creators that I KNOW I can learn from and that will make me feel uplifted (instead of insecure).
2. Try a new hobby (even if you’re bad at it!)
This is one of my favorite things to do when I’m trying to find inspiration!
Let’s be real here…it can be really hard to stay inspired and motivated when you’re constantly staring at a computer screen and forcing yourself to crank out work. I have a bad habit of easily falling into this trap because I’m constantly feeling guilty about not being “productive enough” whenever I have a bit of free time, and sometimes I just need to force myself to relax.
Trying out new hobbies is a really great way to force yourself into a new headspace and environment, which is SO important to staying inspired.
And of course, you can try ANY hobby you like. Some of my favorites include practicing on my longboard when the weather is nice and painting (I love Paint by Numbers kits!). Other hobbies you can try include anything from cooking, biking, knitting, crochet, arts and crafts, DIY projects – the sky is the limit!
And don’t worry if you’re bad at whatever you’re doing… the most important thing is to step outside your comfort zone a little bit, try something new, and have fun doing it!
3. Spend time in nature
By now it’s no surprise that spending time outdoors has immense benefits on our mental and physical health. But spending time with nature is also a really great way to help you get inspired.
Think of how you feel when you see a majestic landscape of mountains, or waterfalls, or a vast desert. The beauty of nature inspires a sense of awe, which can impact our life in profound ways. Studies have shown that awe can expand our perception of time and inspire creativity.
Even if you live in an urban environment (like I do), a walk around your neighborhood or the park can still greatly benefit your mental clarity and physical health.
Simply put, being outdoors makes us feel good, which then helps us feel more creative.
4. Shake up your routine
Routines and building healthy habits are so important to creating a healthy lifestyle. BUT doing the same things every single day can get a bit boring. If you’re feeling like you’re in a rut, try shaking up your routine a bit.
Maybe try a new restaurant, walk a different route than you usually would, or find something in your town that you’ve never tried before. Or if you’re constantly driving to places that are nearby, try walking for once instead. You would be surprised at the things you could overlook when you’re driving by the same streets in a car! (I’ve discovered so many things I’d never even noticed before on the streets I drove by hundreds of times!)
Find a part of your routine that’s feeling a bit drab and see how you could shake things up! The smallest changes in our lives have the power to inspire us and spark creativity.
5. Connect with other artists or creators
Like we talked about earlier, if you’re having trouble finding inspiration within yourself, try turning to others.
Connect with other artists or creators that most likely know what you’re going through. This can be anyone from a mentor, life coach, a friend, or a support group. Maybe even someone who achieved something that you have been wanting to achieve.
Surround yourself with people that can provide you with wisdom and awesome vibes. People that spark inspiration within yourself, and people that you can learn from and share insights or solutions with.
When I started this online business, I turned to Facebook groups and online courses for support. Starting a business can be a lonely and isolating experience, but it’s always much easier when you meet people that are going through the same things as you are and can share in both your struggles and wins.
Before you go
Finding inspiration doesn’t need to be hard. Sometimes we just need to switch things up, get outside, have some fun, and connect with people that inspire us.
